How Much Hair Loss or Hair Shedding is Normal?

Hair Shedding WomenThe standard answer is 80-100 hairs per day is considered a “normal” amount of hair to lose during a 24 hour period. However, this number can be difficult to gauge since we lose hair all day and all night… one hair at a time. Men and women both lose some hairs in the shower, some in the blow-dry process, some in the hallway, some in the car, some at work, etc.

In order to determine if you are losing hair excessively you should do a simple “Pull Test”.

Start by brushing your hair a few times. Not exessively, just gently brush your entire head of hair. You may lose a few hairs in the brushing process but that’s okay.

Now, open your hands, spread your fingers and place each of your open hands onto each side of your face. Then start in the front, keeping your hands touching the scalp, simply run your fingers thru your hair all the way to the back of your head. When you get to the back of the head close your fingers together to make a loose fist while grasping all hairs within your fingers and pull slightly to see which hairs have shed during this pull test.

If you run your fingers thru your hair and get more than 4 shed hairs in your hands then you are losing more hair than you should. This is considered to be excessive hair loss.

You need to keep an eye on this but try not to obsess over it. If this continues for more than 2 weeks then you should seek the help of a hair loss specialist.
